Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) is believed to have originated in the Siberian region of Russian thousands of years ago. The name Chaga is derived from the Russian word for mushroom, "czaga".

Chaga is an irregular shaped, black polypore mushroom. Instead of gills, polypore mushrooms release spores through pores underneath their caps. In the wild, Chaga is parasitic to the Birch trees it attaches itself to, drawing its food from the nutrients of the tree. Chaga mushroomscause a condition known as "heart rot", decaying the heartwood of the trees it infects.

Chaga contains both superoxide dimutase (SOD) enzymes, one of the body's most powerful antioxidant as well as the polysaccharides known as Beta Glucans. Chaga also contains a plant sterol known as lanosterol. Lanosterol may provide nutritive support for cell membrane integrity as well as the endocrine system.
